Crash into Sr. Center Turns Deadly

DES MOINES, IA (KCCI-TV) - A woman seriously hurt in a crash last Monday night has died.  Des Moines police are investigating a vehicle crash that sent two people to the hospital Monday night with serious injuries.

UnityPoint officials said Cara Nelson, 34, died late last week.

Police said Nelson and driver Damien Brockett, 32, were inside an SUV traveling southbound on Second Avenue toward Douglas Avenue about 6 p.m. when it hit a garbage container, went over a curb, jumped back onto the road and then crossed into the northbound lanes. Police said Brockett over-corrected and hit the wall of a senior center.

Witnesses told police the SUV was being driven at a high rate of speed.

"I saw a puff of debris and heard a loud 'kubunk,'" witness Randy Fuller told KCCI. "As I crested to the top of the hill, I saw the vehicle wedged around the corner."

Brockett was taken to Mercy Medical Center and two days after the crash transported to the Polk County Jail.

Police said Brockett was charged with homicide by vehicle, OWI related; second-degree theft, serious injury by vehicle and possession of prescription drug.

Police said the case remains under investigation.
