Weather Affects Last Minute Shopping Lists

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28)--Road crews aren't the only ones preparing for a massive snowstorm tonight. Some last minute shoppers who found they now have even more items on their list.

"I'm one of those people unfortunately. Wait till the last minute, said Mike Grobin, and with the storm rolling in he's not getting off easy...

Its busier than ever and it's only going to get worse

"We haven't started yet. I think we're going to go out on Tuesday probably during the day, said LeeAnn Grimley

But while it's easy to put off Christmas shopping there's no putting off a visit from Mother Nature.

"We try to stock up like water, some food you know in case we're in the house for the next couple of days...gotta be prepared right, said Grobin.

The City of Cedar Rapids is on the same page with its own plan of action.

"As the snow comes, our staff will then start responding overnight we'll have a skeleton crew in to maintain the main roads of the city, said Public Works Maintenance Manager, Craig Hanson.

It's a balancing act, as crews plan ahead or next week's frigid forecast.

"So when we get temperatures below zero on Monday we'll still have crews able to respond and do what we need to make the streets safe, said Hanson.

But some shoppers say they're just not chancing it.

"I want to get this over with real quick so we can get home and beat the storm, said Rick Roquet another last minute shopper.

Craig Hanson says they will be a snow emergency later tonight.

He's asking that people not park anywhere where there's a snow route sign.
