Christmas Eve Ice Fishing
IOWA CITY, IA (CBS2/FOX28) Tis the day before Christmas, and out on Sand Lake, we found Ryan, Justin and Cory, looking for some fish to bake.
"I mean what else do you do on Christmas Eve at negative 15 degrees right, asked Justin Anderson.
If you havent gone ice fishing before, its not an exact science. You battle the wind and the cold, and you need that big twisty appliance.
"Drill a hole, see how deep you are. If you see fish on the Vexilar, keep going, said Anderson.
Its a tool that points out the fish. Thats why the lights jump. It keeps these three guys from feeling like chumps.
"Most of the fish will come up right off the bottom. So you can watch them literally come right up. It's almost like a video game...it's almost like cheating, said Anderson.
The fun is important, but so is staying safe. These guys drilled holes to test the ice so they knew theyd make it back across the lake.
"Say you drill a hole at first and it's two inches of ice, it might not be worth it then. It might be that we go find another pond. Maybe there's some thicker ice somewhere else, said Anderson.
Our heroes didnt catch many fish, but no one was sad. Its being among friends that keeps them all glad.
"You do a lot more chatting and having fun than catching fish, said Cory Holland.
I trekked all the way out and what was my plan? As long as I was there, I might as well try my own hand.
