Applications Available for Iowa City Sidewalk Cafes

IOWA CITY (CBS 2/FOX 28) --
Eating establishments located in the downtown Iowa City area that are interested in constructing a sidewalk caf on a street/parking space or within a City owned planter, may now download a Preliminary Application located on the City's website (http://www.icgov.org/?id=2249).
In 2012, the city council adopted an updated Sidewalk Cafe policy that provides for the use of on street parking areas for a sidewalk cafe with some limitations. In addition, procedure was established for those eating establishments wishing to occupy a City owned planter in the downtown area.
Preliminary applications must be received in the Public Works Department no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 3, 2014 for both on street cafes and cafes located within a planter. If competing applications for available space are received, a lottery will be held on February 15th to determine which applications will be awarded. If no applications are received, the City will consider applications after February 3rd on a first come, first serve basis.
The guidelines and limitations for the on street and planter sidewalk cafes are also available on the City's website.
Please note that a Preliminary Application is only required for use of a street or planter for a sidewalk cafe. If an establishment desires to construct a cafe on the public sidewalk, a full application may be submitted to the Department of Public Works.
