Small Businesses Prepare for Christmas Rush

MARION, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28)--All of uptown Marion is downtown tonight.

The peppermint walk is one way to celebrate the holiday and promote local businesses.

Business owners say the holiday season is one of the most important times of year for sales.

The peppermint walk is a time to come out and celebrate.

It's also a holiday open house for some small businesses here in Marion.

I like to think that everyone leaves a little happier when they come here.

Dori Patrick is talking about the dreaming bear, a studio and boutique she's been running for almost ten years now.

"It's all about creativity, passion and all the things that make you smile, she said.

They are simple things like colorful paintings and other funky handmade artwork, many created by Dori.

Christmas time is a make or break season for all retailers, especially small business owners.

"It kind of decides what will happen to your business next year through the lonely cold months of winter after Christmas is over, Dori said.

Dori says small businesses can't offer steep discounts to customers on Black Friday like the big box stores do.

But what they lack in inventory, they make up for in charm and uniqueness and it's made right here.

She says that's part of the reason people come back to the little guys

"It's very important for the community. Without local businesses we wouldn't have people giving back to the community, said Angie Nassif, employee at The Dreaming Bear.

So every day leading up to Christmas, Dori is here at the dreaming bear creating the perfect gift for the season.

"It's kind of like my grandpa said, you make hay while the sun is shining, she said.
