Waterloo Woman Sentenced For Hiring Undocumented Workers

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) -- A Waterloo restaurant operator has been sentenced in federal court to probation for her role in hiring undocumented workers.
28-year-old Wen "Christy" Xu was sentenced Thursday to three years of probation and fined $12,000 for her plea to one count of conspiracy.
Xu was a cashier and bookkeeper at Hibachi Sushi Buffet,  run by her husband, Yu Jiang, and another man. Jiang, a Chinese citizen, pleaded guilty in September to conspiracy to harbor immigrants in the country illegally. He has not been sentenced.
Federal authorities say the restaurant hired busboys, cooks and dishwashers using a Chicago agency that advertised in Chinese language newspapers. The workers were paid in cash, lived at an apartment leased in Jiang's name and were given rides to work.
