Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter Opens

CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/ FOX 28)-- Searching for the perfect kitty, two-year old Quinten Kluesner and his grandmother think they've found the one.
"We have a cat at home, said Javerna Paggett, Quintens grandmother. And, she's getting pretty old."
They and other animal lovers have been waiting a long time for this day, but finally the doors to the city's new $4.5 million animal shelter are now open.
"It's bright, it's colorful, and it's people and pet-friendly," said Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control manager Diane Webber.
Five years in the making, it's also one of the last flood recovery projects on the city's to-do list.
"Everything was gone, Webber said. There wasn't anything salvageable from out there. That water went way up over the ceiling."
Besides getting a new building, the shelter says just meeting the basic needs of 125 cats and dogs has been a struggle.
"During the last five years, we've been trying to squeeze by, a little bit here and a little bit there," Webber said.
So with the new building, they're hoping for a new start.
