Iowa AG Wants Restrictions On E-Cigs
CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) -- Attorney General Tom Miller says he wants Iowa lawmakers to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors.
Miller said in a press conference Monday that he wants the ban on electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes, to be added to the state's indoor smoking ban. He also wants to determine if the product should have a higher state sales tax rate.
Miller says the state's laws, regulations and policies don't address technological developments on e-cigarettes, which are nicotine-infused vapor inhalers. He also says there's no state or federal age restriction to prevent the sale of e-cigarettes to children.
Miller also wants to address e-cigarettes' standard six percent state sales tax rate. Cigarettes are taxed much higher, and other tobacco products are taxed at 50 percent of wholesale.
