Center Begins Preparation for Christmas

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28)--Some places are already getting ready for Christmas just one day after Thanksgiving. Its a mission to help the needy.

Maria Canales is a 20 year veteran when it comes to volunteering at olivet neighborhood mission. She says she does it for many reasons.

"It's fun. The people I work with. It's something to do on a spare time. I love to give back to the community, she said.

Maria usually volunteers on Saturdays but she's here today, working just a day after thanksgiving.

"We've had a lot of stuff come in to help out with the families who are in need. So we're getting that together, she said.

It's something those at Olivet do every year, for every holiday and so far things are almost ready to go for this Christmas.

"We could always use more but we are pretty well supplied by the community with gifts, said Glasier.

The idea is service. From food to dishes clothes and books, there is something for everyone in need.

Olivet is associated with the Presbyterian Church and has been around since the 1970s.

Their goal is to provide various services free of charge to the needy.

"We're always looking for more people to get involved become involved as volunteers and more people who need assistance to come in and we'll be glad to help them if we can, said Glasier.

"There's something here for everybody, said Canales and the mission continues this Christmas.
