Fill the Truck Campaign Kicks Off

CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/ FOX 28) Yeah, we know black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year.
Mostly involving long lines, some pushing, and overall markdown madness.
But as items fly off shelves at stores nationwide, the Salvation Army is hoping some of them land in their donation boxes this weekend.
"You could go out and buy some baby toys, buy some footballs, some sports things, buy some nail polish for those little older girls," said Lia Pontarelli, director of development and communications for the Salvation Army of Linn County.
It's part of their "Fill the Truck" campaign-- which collects unopened toys for Linn County kids and gives them to families in need in time for Christmas.
"The cost of Christmas keeps going up from year to year," Pontarelli said.
"Some families just can't even get the basics covered."
Last year the Salvation Army collected close to 2,500 toys--an amount they hope gets even bigger this year--enough to fill the big red and white boxes planted outside of each Walmart in Cedar Rapids and Marion.
"Every little toy, every little donation that we get will make a huge difference in those families lives," Pontarelli said.
A difference some shoppers say is worth the few extra dollars.
"It's needed, and I love it," said shopper Jill Hermanson.
