Man Stuck in Car for 55 Hours

EDDYVILLE, Iowa (KCCI-TV) A man found trapped in his car Sunday had been there since about 5 p.m. Friday, authorities said.

A 911 caller reported the crashed vehicle to the Wapello County Sheriff's Office at 12:59 p.m. Sunday. The car was on Highway 63 south of Eddyville between two bridges near a creek.

The driver, Patrick Allen Douglas, 60, of Ottumwa, was pinned inside the car.

Rescue workers spend nearly and hour and half using the JAWS of life to get him free.

Authorities said the investigation shows the crash happened between 5 and 6 p.m. Friday.

Douglas was flown by air ambulance to a Des Moines hospital. His condition is not yet available.

The crash report shows Douglas told authorities that he was southbound on Highway 63 around dusk when he fell asleep and did not wake up until his car had left the roadway. The car was located in the median between the northbound and southbound bridges, and had struck the south side of the creek ditch.

The case remains under investigation. Authorities said the driver will likely be charged with failure to maintain control and failure to have a valid license.
