Gilbertville Recount Shows Tie For Mayor

GILBERTVILLE, Iowa (AP) -- A hand-counting of votes has resulted in a tie in the race for mayor of the northeast Iowa city of Gilbertville.
Election results earlier showed Councilman Mark Thome had won over write-in candidate Jeff Balnvanz by 109 votes to 102 votes.
However, a hand recount of absentee ballots and voting at the city's precinct showed some ballots went uncounted. That recount showed both men with 109 votes.
Black Hawk County Elections Manager Kyle Jensson says the names of each candidate will be written on separate pieces of paper and placed in a "receptacle." A county supervisor will draw the winner's name Thursday morning.
Gilbertville is a city of about 750 people. It's six miles southeast of Waterloo.
