Obamacare Change to Have Little Impact in IA

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa Insurance Commissioner Nick Gerhart says the state will feel little impact from President Barack Obama's announcement regarding policy cancellations.
Obama said Thursday that insurers can continue to sell policies canceled under the Affordable Care Act for another year. But in Iowa, few people had seen such cancellations because the state had already granted insurers permission to extend current policies through 2014.
The state's largest insurer, Wellmark Blue Cross & Blue Shield said in June that it would offer individual and small business group members the option of keeping current plans through Dec. 31, 2014. Other insurers have made similar offers.
About 1,000 people in Iowa who buy individual insurance are facing policy cancellations. Gerhart said those cancellations may remain because some carriers are getting out of the market.
