AARP Holds ACA Information Sessions
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) Health Insurance changes through the Affordable Care Act are having a large impact in the Corridor, especially for older residents.
The Healthcare Exchange rollout has brought frustration for some, and for others, uncertainty about their coverage.
"It sounds like mass confusion in a lot of senses right now, said Marion resident Klair Kent.
"It's no wonder that people are going forward a little bit leery, said Affordable Care Act Outreach and Education Specialist Jeff Tourdot.
So AARP is holding educational meetings over the next few weeks. Theyre open to the public and explain the new law. The goal is just to teach.
"We've had a number of individuals that are in that age-group that have sought our assistance, said Tourdot.
There's a lot to learn about the new Healthcare law, said AARP Volunteer Mary Muehl.
Organizers say the most important parts of these meetings for people who are on Medicaid, Medicare or receive VA benefits are that they don't have to sign up on the Healthcare Exchange but they still might see changes to their coverage.
"So we go through that and explain those updates to Medicare and the benefits they get from it, said Muehl.
For some, Tourdot says learning what the Affordable Care Act has to offer could mean realizing something like retirement is within reach.
"They're now going to be able to shop around, they're going to be able to go through the Marketplace and see if that's a feasible option for them to take an early retirement, said Tourdot.
He says the idea is to make it easier for anyone to figure out if they could have a better insurance plan.
The next meeting is November 20th at the Coralville Public Library from 11:30 am to 1 pm and again from 5:30 pm to 7 pm.
Heres a list of additional meetings:
- November 20 7 pm Marion Public Library
- December 11 6:30 pm Cedar Rapids Downtown Library
- December 18 6:30 pm Cedar Rapids Ladd Library
