Transportation Center Eyes December Opening

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) -- Since the floods in 2008, busses have been running from a parking lot near the New Bohemia District. But come December 2nd, the routes will run through the refurbished Ground Transportation Center. The City says not only is it safer, but its much more inviting.

Between the floor being installed, the brand new pavers and the AstroTurf rest areas, the Ground Transportation Center is taking on a new and more open look.

"It'll be one complete facility as far as everything's going to be tied together. It's not going to look piecemeal like it did in the past, said Cedar Rapids Transit Manager Brad DeBrower.

The idea is to make it a place where riders dont hanging out too much while they wait for their bus. When we took a look back in June, there was plenty to remind you that the building had been abandoned for a while. Now, the existing sidewalk will be torn up and redone to match the area around the terminal. Even the traffic pattern surrounding the facility will change. DeBrower says it will allow busses to come and go with minimal effect on other vehicles.

"I'll think we'll be making the change over this next weekend, said DeBrower.

That makes the center more effective compared to the temporary location.

"The little place here doesn't hold that many people, said Ruth Turnbull, who says she rides the bus very often.

The December 2nd moving date cant come fast enough for riders today, who braved temperatures this morning in the mid 20s.

"I'm pretty sure it's going to be freezing by then and the way this weather is going, it needs to open up fast, said Shanitha Kennedy, who says she rides the bus every day.
