Clarified Law Gives Bikers Space
IOWA CITY, IA (CBS2/FOX28) -- From RAGBRAI to the granGABLE, there is no mistaking that Iowa is a state for cyclists -- and it just got a little more bike-friendly.
County attorneys were recently trained on a clarification to a state law that says, drivers have to be an entire traffic lane away from cyclists when passing them on the road.
The change is a tweak on the technical language of an Iowa Code, but as small as it is, it makes bikers a lot happier.
"When I'm going down Gilbert (Street) either to Hy-Vee or to work, it's always like a car passes me by, like, inches on the side," said biker Tarik Abushalanfah. "It makes me feel a lot safer, for sure."
The change is also being included on the Iowa driver's test, so new drivers will learn the law right off the bat.
Iowa Bicycle Coalition Executive Director Mark Wyatt said he doesn't expect to see much of a difference on the road, as most drivers already practice this out of common courtesy and safety.
