Woman Seeks Long Overdue Honor

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) -- A Waterloo woman is seeking to honor her great-grandfather who died nearly a century ago while responding to a fire call in Dubuque.
Kathy Flynn is working with the Dubuque Fire Department to add her great-grandfather to the names of firefighters killed on duty at the Iowa Firefighters Memorial in Coralville.
After learning from her mother about how Lt. George Beyer died, Flynn began doing more research.
She found that Beyer died Aug. 21, 1915, after being injured in a fall from a fire truck.
The Dubuque Fire Department helped with the research and submitted an application to add Beyer's name to the memorial.
Flynn and her family are planning to attend a June service in Coralville to see Beyer's name added to the monument.
