Peggy Whitworth Passes Away

CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- A pillar of the Cedar Rapids community has passed away. Margaret "Peggy" Whitworth died Friday, after battling lung cancer. She was 71 years old.

Whitworth helped create the Brucemore Historic Site, and served as its Executive Director from 1981 to 2007. She was also highly-involved with the Iowa Democratic Party, and even worked on then-Senator Barack Obama's presidential campaign in 2007.

Over the past few days, Whitworth received phone calls from President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry. President Obama even sent her a handwritten note overnight.

Funeral services for Whitworth are pending with Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services of Cedar Rapids.
