Watching the Weather on Homecoming Weekend

IOWA CITY, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- There are your usual homecoming attractions - and then you have the real reason for the homecoming parade season.

"You get candy!" 10 year old Jaiden Roesler said.

The tiny morsels of happiness weren't the only thing sweet about Friday.

Iowa City Parade goers were greeted by blue skies, after a week of gloomy predictions.

"Glad it's not raining," parade attendee John Johnson said. "Its beautiful and I'm thankful for that."

There was no rain on this parade, but the rest of the weekend is up in the air.

The threat of severe weather forced Fridays homecoming concert featuring Third Eye Blind indoors. Now university officials are hoping the weather doesn't ruin the experience for football fans on Saturday.

"We're hoping that it's just rain, and we don't have any severe weather," said Associate Athletic Director Paula Jantz.

If that weather does come, U of I officials have plans in place.

Shelter will be available for tailgaters caught in the storm.

"Carver Hawkeye Arena Will be open, the Fieldhouse will be open, the rec building will also be open," Jantz said.

If necessary, sirens and public announcements will be utilized, including outdoor weather sirens, and HawkVision message boards in and around Kinnick Stadium.

The rain and severe weather threat doesn't scare everyone - like Sarah Harris, who only goes to two games every year.

"I go to the first game of the year, no matter who we're playing, and I go to homecoming," Harris said.

She'll enjoy it, rain or shine.

"It doesn't matter what it's doing tomorrow, I can bundle and dress appropriately."

Officials also say if you run indoors to get away from the storm make sure you secure your tailgating items, such as tents and coolers, so they don't go flying.

They also say keep an eye posted to social media sites for update. You can find weather updates on our Twitter or Facebook page all day Saturday. Just click the links below:
