North Liberty Storm Damage
NORTH LIBERTY, IA (CBS2/FOX28) -- Home and business owners across the Corridor are cleaning up Thursday night after a quick but intense storm rolled through the area.
One North Liberty family's garage completely collapsed after a strong burst of wind ripped their garage door through the roof.
The family said they were in their house when the storm started, and when they went to close the garage door and go to the basement, the wind was shaking the garage door.
It was right after that when neighbors say they heard a big boom.
Next door neighbor Glenn Chatfield is a weather spotter, and he said he thought the storm was a micro-burst, because of the way the door was lifted through the top of the roof.
"I started hearing very strong wind, got up and looked at my anemometer, showing 52 miles an hour, and then I heard a big 'kathump' on my right which I have discovered is 8 feet of my fence has been ripped out and blown down, and then I heard a big 'bam' and that was time to come out and look out the front door, as I'm watching my front porch bench fly across. That's what I saw that ripped open, at that point, I said, 'It's time to call the National Weather Service," Chatfield said.
Everyone in the neighborhood was safe after storm, but the family was not allowed back into their home because the fire department wanted to make sure it was structurally sound.
