'Under God' Under Review

BOSTON (CNN) -- The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court will hear arguments on the constitutionality of the two little words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, a subject of controversy since they were added in 1954.
Opponents contend that the phrase violates the state's Equal Rights Amendment and that kids can't really "opt out" of reciting the offending phrase without being ostracized; defenders argue that no one's forcing kids to say the words.
The executive director of the American Humanist Association, a group "advocating progressive values and equality for humanists, atheists and freethinkers," says that if the suit is successful in Massachusetts, the organization will seek similar measures in states across the country.
