Lone Tree Student with Weapon Prompts Lockdown

LONE TREE, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28)--A student's clothing led to a frightening discovery, at Lone Tree Community School.

School officials found a knife on the student, prompting a 2-hour lockdown.

Some parents at lone tree community school came to pick up their children earlier than usual today.

"I'm uncomfortable with them being here, said Paige Funk.

That's because this morning, the school went under lockdown.

That order was given when superintendent Michael Reeves looked outside his office window and saw something that caught his eye.

"I saw someone dressed in such a way that would indicate to me at least that it might be a dangerous situation, he said.

Reeves says the student was not only masked but also carrying a weapon.

So I said to the dean of students, I said, you might want to catch this person at the door, and they did while at the same time, contacting authorities.

"Officers responded and took the subject into custody. Obviously we're early into the incident and we're investigating the situation, said Major Steve Dolezal of the Johnson County Sheriffs office.

With the situation over, the lockdown was lifted and students returned to their normal schedule.

Although some parents still felt uneasy, they say the school did a good job.

"They took care of it right away and that made me feel really good. And that the kids were safe right away, said Funk

Authorities have identified the student as 18-year-old Daniel Jansen.

He was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for an evaluation.
