Group Protests Rising Text Book Costs

IOWA CITY (CBS 2/FOX 28) - The Iowa PIRG (Public Interest Research Group) just released a new report detailing how University of Iowa students paid over $25 million dollars on text books last year, textbooks they say that have dramatically increased in price.

The report claims over the last decade textbook costs have skyrocketed by 82% leaving many students unable to afford required books.

Sara Holm, a Junior at the University of  Iowa  believes that everyone who attends school should be able to afford  the required materials.

I know Im not alone," she tells CBS 2/FOX 28 "I know there are a lot of other students out there who cant afford education and thats a problem.  I think education should be affordable and accessible.

The solution Holm says is "open textbooks".  A library of books offered free online and available for print at a fraction of the cost, driving down student book expenses by an estimated 80%.

A program similar at Washington StateUniversity is called Open Course Library where it has already developed free online resources for 81 courses, saving students an estimated $5.5 million dollars since 2011.
