Drunk Driver Leads IC Police On Chase
IOWA CITY (CBS 2/FOX 28) - A 21-year old drunk driver led Iowa City police on a mile long chase early Sunday morning before crashing his car.
Police say John Carl Fobian was spotted coming out of the Kum and Go at 300 East Burlington just after 3:00 a.m. Sunday Morning.
A police Bike patrol officer says in the criminal complaint that Fobian "was clearly highly intoxicated" when he was seen getting into a 2012 Lexus.
The officer says Fobian began backing out of a parking spot, was told to stop - and did. But when told to put the car in park, he put it in drive "...rapidly accelerated toward the story, then put thecar in reverse and backed up, and finally accelerated rapidly out of the parking lot at a high rate of speed."
The bike patrol officer called for assistance and a nearly mile-long chase began southbound on Gilbert Street then eastbound on Bowery Street.
At the intersection of Bowery and Summit Fobian apparently lost control and crashed his car.
In addition to having a preliminary blood alcohol level of .134, Officers also found marijuana in the center console of his car.
Fobian is charged with drunk driving, driving on a suspended license and possession of marijuana. He was booked into the Johnson County Jail.
