Residents React to Hancher Demo
IOWA CITY, IA (AP) - Crews have begun tearing down a flood-damaged historic building at the University of Iowa.
The demolition of Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City began Monday morning with a wrecking ball striking the building. Officials say the demolition will be completed by the end of the year.
The Hancher Auditorium originally opened in 1972 as part of the Hancher-Voxman-Clapp complex. It was damaged during flooding in 2008.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is helping replace the building with a nearby structure that's scheduled to open in 2015. The site of the old Hancher building will become green space.
