Man Escapes CR House Fire

CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- One man is out of his home after a fire Thursday afternoon in Cedar Rapids. It happened at about 5:53 p.m. at a single-family home at 1547 32nd Street NE.

The homeowner, 36-year-old Matthew Wagner, said he could smell smoke. After investigating, Wagner found smoke coming in around the woodwork near the front door. He opened the door and found smoke and flames on the front porch. Wagner was able to get out of the home safely.

Firefighters arrived and put out the fire, limiting fire damage to the front porch and door. However, the entire home suffered smoke damage. Firefighters were also able to rescue a pet rabbit from the basement of the home.

Officials are now investigating what caused the fire.
