Performance Group Makes Wapsipinicon River Bank a Stage

INDEPENDENCE, IA (CBS2/FOX28) Some days, its just too nice out for a theater performance indoors.

Its gorgeous, said Myque Franz, a co-Artistic Producer for the Wapsipinicon Theatre Festival.

So the Wapsipinicon Theatre Festival took its show outside and put it on water.

My wife said, Well, your parents own a canoe rental business and you do this theatre, why not put them together? And I said, Thats a great idea.

Myque and his wife brought in actors from all across North America to Buchanan County.

Were such a rural area and you dont get a lot of theater or people that come from other places, said floating audience member Nancy Blow. We normally have to go there to see that.

Even with just a week to prepare, the goal was to first connect with the community by attending and performing at local events like farmers markets.

Once we got to that point we then could experiment with ideas, said co-Artistic Producer for the Wapsipinicon Theatre Festival Zita Nyarady. We know that we were working with the story of the Odyssey.

Naturally, theres a Cyclops. But the River is also an important storytelling tool.

Its a journey, moving downstream, going through all these adventures, all these obstacles to reach a very specific goal, said Nyarady.

It all helps the audience build community with the actors and each other, one paddle at a time.
