State Grants Aid in Muscatine Restoration

MUSCATINE, Iowa (AP) -- A $20,000 state grant will aid in the restoration of a 130-year-old house in Muscatine.
The grant from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs was one of 35 given to organizations and individuals throughout the state.
The grant to the Friends of Muscatine Historic Preservation will help with ongoing effort to restore the J.J. Shafnet House.
Plans call for reconstructing the building's foundation using existing bricks, then moving onto other restoration projects.
   The house is now empty.
Michael Maharry, president of the preservation group, says the house doesn't have special historic significance, but it's a good example of a home for a laborer.
He says Muscatine still has plenty of laborers and "we wanted to preserve and restore this house to represent them."
