Free Medical Device Scam
CHARLESTON, WV (CBS 2/FOX 28) --
A new telephone scam is targetting anyone who may need medical equipment or a life alert system.
Right now, dozens of people in West Virginia are complaining to the Attorney General's office about a "company" calling their homes and offering free devices.
Officials say the calls could be coming from anywhere and could spread to other states, including Iowa.
The call starts with a recorded message and tells the victim they are able to get a piece of medical equipment free of charge.
The recording asks the person to push one and speak to a representative.
That's when the scammer could try to get personal information, like the victim's social secuirty number or bank account information to try and steal money.
Officials say if you get a call like this, hang up right away.
If you do speak to a person, do not give them any of your own information but ask them questions instead.
Then hang up, call your local attorney general's office, and share the information with them.
