Weather Blamed for Marengo Fish Kill
MARENGO, Iowa (AP) -- Warm and dry weather has caused thousands of fish to die in the eastern Iowa community of Marengo.
The fish died in a small pond at Gateway Park in Marengo.
The pond usually connects to the Iowa River, but that access was cut off when the river level dropped, causing a drop in oxygen levels.
Brad Baker, of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says similar fish kills have happened in the area before.
Most of the fish killed were carp, buffalo fish and shad.
DNR biologist Paul Sleeper says the hot conditions should cause the fish to decompose quickly.
