Labor Day Camping Precautions
JOHNSON COUNTY (CBS 2/ FOX 28)-- Sitting in their lawn chairs, having a good laugh under the roof of their camper is how Vivian and Richard Albert celebrate every labor day weekend.
Weve been camping for 50 years almost 60 years, said Vivian Albert.
But this year theyre stocking up on a lot more than just snacks.
Inside their camper, theyve got cases of water and the air conditioner on full blast.
A trailer is a tin box, and it really gets hot in here if its not air conditioned, Albert said.
With temperatures reaching near 100 hundred all week through the weekend, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is urging campers both in trailers and tents to stay cool and out of the heat.
Stay hydrated, be aware of the heat, said Joe Wilkinson, information specialist for the Iowa DNR.
A lot of the activities are better done in the early morning or the evening, Wilkinson said. Through the heat of the day, thats where you might want to sit in the shade and relax.
And its not just the heat that worries officials.
Its always a concern when you have a fire going and dry weather, Wilkinson said.
Wilkinson says because of the dry weather its critical that campers use park fire pits this year to burn wood.
Not exactly a big concern for the Alberts who say theyve got a fool-proof plan to beat the heat.
Well sit in our air-conditioned trailer a lot is what well do, Vivian said.
