Vinton Puts the Boom in Boomtown

VINTON (CBS 2/ FOX 28)From up close, an eight inch, homemade firework may just look like a paper ball with wires hanging out but drop it into a firework cylinder, and its an explosive.
That would fill this whole area if it went off right now, said Charles Yedlik, president of Iowas Pyrotechnics Association.
Now imagine thousands of them going off back to backits what makes Vintons annual Boomtown the largest fireworks festival in Iowa.
The fireworks show is so amazing, said camper Cheryl Fratzke who traveled from Oelwein.
Fratze and her family have been camped out since Thursday, waiting to see the sky explode into colors.
I would have traveled six hours to come here, she said.
More than five thousand people are expected to pack Benton County Fairgrounds to see the show that took about a year to put on.
Homemade and store-bought fireworks all come courtesy of Iowa Pyrotechnicsa group of firework fanatics who build, light, and blow up the bombs from an electronic board.
Theres 45 items that can be on that one mod, we have it programmed so that it will come off at a certain time, Yedlik said.
And with so many explosives in one spot, they have fire extinguishers, fire fighters, and at least 400 feet between the stands and the displays to keep the crowd safe.
We want to put on a good show, he said. We want to entertain the people, but we dont want anyone to get hurt.
