Hy-Vee To Fill Empty Iowa City Lot

IOWA CITY, IA (CBS2/FOX28) Linda Kuncl remembers when the worker at Roberts Dairy would come across the street for lunch. She also remembers the day they gathered at her bar whent hey were told the dairy was closing, and theyd be out of work.

"While you feel bad for them, you're also feeling bad for yourself, because you know you're going to be losing business, said the owner of Hilltop Tavern Linda Kuncl.

The proposal to build a grocery store and gas station to occupy the now-vacant space would bring business back to Lindas tavern and the surrounding Iowa City Community.

"It'll provide an enhanced shopping opportunity for those who are in that area which is always good. It's one of those quality of life issues on which we all depend, said the President and CEO of the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce Nancy Quellhorst.

A new Hy-Vee will help local businesses but it'll also make Dodge Street look a little nicer. It'll pull weeds and plant landscaping that local businesses want to see.

"Any activity over there will be better than the deadness that has been there," said Kuncl.

The key to making sure the revitalized street corner isnt overwhelming in a residential community is the buildings placement on the plot of land. City officials say the grocery store will purposely be far from the intersection, using the parking lot as a buffer.

"They've monitored traffic counts, said Quellhorst. The infrastructure is in place to accommodate that and so I think that's one of those areas that are well-preparedto handle it."

All to return whats now an eye-sore to a bustling place of business.
