UI Police Investigate Campus Assault

IOWA CITY (CBS 2/FOX 28) - University of Iowa police are investigating the first report of an assault this fall term.

Police received a call about 2:45 a.m. Sunday morning that a woman walking home alone in the area of Byington Rd and Melrose Ave was assaulted.

She told police a man appeared in front of her and blocked her way on the sidewalk. He then reportedly shoved her to the ground and got on top of her but she was able to fight him off.

The woman suffered minor injuries but didn't need medical attention, and was not able to provide police with much of a description.

Anyone with information is asked to call the UI police department at (319) 355-5022 or call Iowa City Crimestoppers at (319) 358-TIPS.

Campus officials are using the incident to remind students, especially women, to walk in groups as much as possible and call 911 whenever an incident is seen or suspected.
