Trouble Around Taylor Elementary

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- By day, the playground at Taylor Elementary provides the ideal spot for a pick-up game.

However, people in the neighborhood say that changes when the sun goes down.

The events that transpired late Wednesday evening provided an example of that. On the playground, two groups of girls were getting into a dispute. The argument almost came to blows when the police showed up, along with undercover officers, and took them into custody.

Residents say its the norm for the neighborhood lately.

Yup, just more police cars tonight, resident Bill Love said. I can't bring my grandkids out here anymore, I don't allow it because they might get beat up or something, Love said.

They say something needs to be done.

150 kids out here ganging around and hanging around and not really doing muchthat's when the trouble starts, Marilyn Love said.

Teens we spoke to before the fight broke out agree.

Whole buncha fights out here over some stupid stuff, one teen said.

Some are taking small steps to make the area safer.

A clean playground is a step towards a safer playground, said resident Tamara Dowd.

Tamara and her husband Brian spent time going around the school picking up trash just minutes before the altercation.

You want to beautify your neighborhood make in nice be proud of where you live and what it is,Mr. Dowd said.

Hoping it does something to change to help bring change to a place that is normally loved, but now....feared.

Its unreal, Bill Love said. I just...I'm waiting for someone to get shot or stabbed.
