Cabbie: Robberies Nothing New

IOWA CITY, IA (CBS2/FOX28) -- Drivers with two separate cab companies were robbed at gunpoint in Iowa City over the weekend, both in the same general area. The first happened Friday night on Petsel Place and the second happened at Melrose Avenue and Samoa Drive just after 10 p.m. on Sunday.
Rafat Alawneh, the owner of No. 1 Cab, says the situations are nothing new.
His company wasn't part of the robberies over the weekend, but Alawneh says after being held up at gunpoint himself, he tells his drivers to stay away from areas where they have been robbed before. That includes areas near the Pheasant Ridge neighborhood, where one of the suspects fled in Friday's robbery.
"We tell them, for your protection, do not go. Don't go in the night time. Day time, that's fine," he said.
Iowa City police say they area investigating both robberies. They do not know whether the two incidents are related.
The two companies that were robbed are Five Stars Taxi and Yellow Cab.
