Why No Cooling Centers in CR?

CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/ FOX 28)-- Its the fourth day of 90 plus degree weather in the corridor.
The sweltering heat and humidity is sending many in search of cool places to chill.
When its this hot, the city takes the time to point out that you can come to these places where the air conditioning is running to cool off, get out of the sun, said Jeff Sears, an employee at the Robert A. Lee recreation center.
Iowa City has designated the center in addition to two other places as cooling centers.
The same goes for Dubuque which lists three centers on the citys website.
But try looking for designated cooling centers in Cedar Rapids, and you wont have the same luck.
Linn County does not designate cooling centers, said Mike Goldberg, Director of Linn County Emergency management.
Emergency management officials say their policy is health-based, not comfort-based.
Until those conditions reach what is excessive heat warnings, then its not considered to be an excessive public health issue, Goldberg said.
