IC Flood Prevention Cleanup Schedule Change

IOWA CITY -- Due to the tremendous volunteer response in assisting the City of Iowa City with the removal of sand from bags, the previously scheduled cleanup efforts for Saturday, July 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. have been changed to 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

Volunteers are asked to check-in at the Streets Complex at 3800 Napoleon Lane and to wear closed-toe shoes. Water will be provided, but volunteers are asked to provide a box cutter or utility knife, sunscreen, and bug spray.

City staff recently retrieved the sandbags placed near residential areas and businesses that had been threatened by rising waters last month. The pre-filled bags were returned to the City's Streets Complex for storage, where the sand will be utilized for winter street sanding and other public works projects, but first, the bags must be emptied.

Volunteers must be 14 years or older to participate. Those under 18 must have a parent sign a liability waiver. Contact Carol Sweeting at (319) 541-2385 with questions.
