Dubuque Police Bust Charity Scam

DUBUQUE (CBS 2/FOX 28) - Dubuque police said late Friday they've busted a charity scam called "Forged by Fire", arresting a durango man.

Police say the charges stem from an investigation of 50 year old Christopher H. Simms and his charity "Forged by Fires".

Simms is charged with setting up the charity and using it to obtain money and/or merchandise under the pretense the donations would be used for donations to military personnel.

Police, arresting Simms for Fraudulent Practice in the 2nd degree and 3rd Degree Theft,  say they determined the scam took in several local businesses and private citizens.

He's also charged for writing checks on a closed bank account in the name of the charity.

Police say anyone approached or solicited by Simms for donations to the charity should call Dubuque Police Investigator Nick Schlosser at (563) 587-3813.
