Fire Costs Farmers Thousands of Livestock

WELLMAN, IA (CBS2/FOX28) -- Fire broke out at a farm off of Fir Avenue in Wellman just after 3 p.m. on Sunday, completely destroying one hen house and burning another.

The fire also killed nearly 17,000 egg-laying hens in the destroyed building.

Fire crews from four different agencies fought for nearly four hours to put out the blaze, and parts of the building were still smoldering at 7 p.m.

The owners of the farm, Richard and Rhoda Beachy, didn't own the hens, but were leasing the space to another farmer. They weren't sure how much the loss would cost them, and they haven't had enough time yet to figure out what they'll do next.

"It's shock, and we're just going to trust the Lord. That's what we're going to do. So, yeah, it's kind of that way, and He'll provide, somehow. We don't know how yet, but He will, He always has," said Richard Beachy.

Fire crews don't know yet how the fire started.
