Iowa City Man Who Escaped Handcuffs Returns

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- An Iowa City man who police say eluded arrest after slipping out of his handcuffs has turned himself in.

Authorities say 22-year-old Pedro Gemartino showed up Wednesday at the Johnson County Jail to face several charges stemming from an incident on May 30.

Gemartino had been pulled over on suspicion of drunken driving. He's accused of slipping out of his handcuffs as police transported him from a squad car to the county jail.

Authorities failed to locate Gemartino after he fled on foot, and they issued a warrant for his arrest.

Gemartino is charged with driving while barred, along with two felony charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and escape of a felon. Court records do not list an attorney.
