Petition Filed Against IC Bar Ordinance
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Petitions with about 5,000 signatures have been turned into Iowa City officials in an effort to repeal an ordinance the keeps people younger than the legal drinking age out of most bars late at night.
City Clerk Marian Karr says that if at least 2,500 of those signatures submitted Monday are verified, the City Council has a choice. It must either repeal the ordinance that bans those younger than 21 from being in a bar after 10 p.m. or put the issue on the November ballot.
If enough signatures are valid, council member Connie Champion says it's likely the question would be put to voters.
The council enacted the 21-only ordinance in 2010. Since then, the council has approved exemptions for venues offering entertainment.
