Homes, Businesses, Vehicles Underwater in Lowden

(CBS2/FOX28) LOWDEN, Iowa – Several inches of rain fell in the small town of Lowden early Monday morning flooding much of the community. Rescue crews estimate more than 50 percent of the town had at one point during the day been covered in water.

Several homes, business, and vehicles were among the partially submerged structures visible from Highway-30 which runs right through town. It’s something resident Steve Geottschalk knows all too well, he had to be rescued by boat.

“It’s bad,” said Geottschalk, “I’ve never seen anything like it before.”

Like many people who call Lowden home, all Steve has with him is what he was able to throw into a small garbage bag before emergency crews arrived at his home.

Neighbors says the waters came without warning, surprising all who live in there, just like Steve, a seasoned National Weather Service observer with more than 50 years’ experience.

CBS 2’s Josh Scheinblum reports.
