Star Trek Descends on Iowa

RIVERSIDE, IA (CBS2/FOX28) – Over the next few days, Riverside, Iowa will attract a lot of characters.

“Aye! I don’t think we’re going to make it this time captain!” exclaimed Star Trek Impersonator Mark Kuehnle in Scotty’s voice. “We’re pushing it too much!”

Kuehnle is just from Cedar Rapids. Some of the other folk that will be coming to the Hawkeye State are from considerably farther.

“There’s not a day goes by that I don’t stop in the museum and I’m surprised at who’s been there,” said the President of the Riverside Area Community Club. “Someone from Germany, Someone from Japan even.”

They come from all over the world to what seems like just another small town in Iowa. Except for what’s supposed to happen here in another two centuries.

“A lot of nice people,” said the Owner of Murphy’s Bar and Grill, Jerry Murphy. “They might dress a little funny but they’re nice people.”

A lot of what the crowds can enjoy this weekend is thanks partially to grants from the Riverside Casino. The Riverside Foundation gives funds to non-profit groups, including the museum in town.

“We got the money to buy these,” said the President of the Riverside History Center, Phillip Richman. “These are actually set-used props from some of the Star Trek shows.

Which can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of their home planet.

“We’ve had Klingons going around spraying the crowd with water and just going crazy like Klingons would,” said McCracken.

“Klingons are a lot of fun. You got to see them. They know how to party,” said Murphy.
