Iowa Lawmakers Reach Tentative Education Funding Policy

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) --
A state lawmaker says legislators have a tentative education policy deal that would provide additional school funding.
Republican Rep. Ron Jorgenson, of Sioux City, says Wednesday the plan would provide more basic school funding for the next academic year, as well as offer dollars to districts that adopt a program to raise minimum teacher pay and offer leadership incentives.
Under the preliminary agreement, Jorgenson says a task force would review teacher evaluations and some restrictions on homeschooling would be lifted.
Jorgenson says the deal must still be reviewed by legislators in the House and Senate. But he says he is optimistic they could resolve the issue Wednesday. Both legislative chambers are in session Wednesday, with hopes of soon concluding the 2013 session.
