Big Events Mean Big Business In Corridor
IOWA CITY, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- The NCAA awarded five different championship tournaments to the corridor on Wednesday. They include two wrestling national championships in Cedar Rapids. The University of Iowa will host swimming and diving, cross country and gymnastics - all between 2015 and 2018.
All these big events could mean a big boost for the local economy.
On Wednesday, the pool at the UI recreation center is filled with kids from the Iowa Flyers swim club, but come 2015, it will be front and center for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
March is often a slow time of year, anyway around here, so it's a big deal, said Laurie Haman with the Iowa City-Coralville CVB. Itll definitely bring in a lot of people to the area.
Officials say the event may also bring significant dollars into the area. The CVB expects the fanfare to bring millions in revenue to Iowa City and Coralville.
Our airports will be busy, restaurants, shopping dining, everything, Haman said.
Parents watching their little flyers at the UI recreation center were looking forward to the big boys coming to town.
I think anything big, that gets national coverage for out little area is great, parent Kim Christensen said. I think it's great for the businesses and it's great for the coverage and recognition.
Across town in Cedar Rapids, businesses are set to benefit from another championship tournament.
The Blue Strawberry Coffee Company is just a short walk from the US Cellular Center, home of this week's NCAA Division 2 Volleyball Championship. They are preparing extra staff to help with the potential spike in traffic.
Anytime we have an event like this, it's a real boost for the downtown area, all the merchants benefit, store owner Mike Monnahan said.
With more events on the way, businesses hope to see the benefits continue.
