Westdale Mall Renovations Delayed

CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/ FOX 28)The redevelopment of Westdale Mall is a change the southwest side of the city has been waiting for, for years.
"I think it would be great for this side of town to have this kind of shopping center available again," said Katie, a shopper.
"I'm excited if they can get it going, said Marge McDonald a shopper.
It being a $90 million facelift that would take the current Westdale Mall from an empty lot to a 72-acre shopping center and multi-use complex.
People won't recognize the place anymore because of how it's been revitalized," said Mayor Ron Corbett.
But construction that should have already started is now at a standstill.
"As of now there are some business issues," Corbett said.
The big hold up is mainly due to mall developers and JC Penney butting heads. The retail store is refusing to approve development plans in the face of possibly having to pay higher rent to stay at the mall.
"The developers are going to invest so much into a building, they're going to want increased rent,"  Corbett said.
But with millions of dollars already invested, plus potential jobs and revenue that could come from redevelopment, Corbett says the stakes are too high.
"They both have a lot to lose if the deal goes south," he said.
Not to mention the many shoppers waiting for a new mall to call home.
"It would be very disappointing if it didn't get going," McDonald said.
"We'd be missing out on a good opportunity," said Katie.
