Seniors Speak Out at AARP Event

WATERLOO (CBS 2/ FOX 28)-- One by one seniors spoke out about their concerns for the future.
"Our health situation changes from year to year," said AARP member Beverly Trost.
At 74, Trost says paying for healthcare has been hard.
Within the last three years, she's been diagnosed with asthma, osteoporosis and has had seven cancer screenings.
"I couldn't afford a Medicare advantage plan anymore because of the chronic illnesses that were beginning to develop," Trost said.
She's one of more than 75 seniors speaking out at AARPs "You've Earned A Say" event- a town hall which breaks down Medicare, from its cost to ways to make it better.
"People have paid into these programs, said Anthony Carroll, advocacy director of Iowa AARP. They expect and rely on them to live a healthy lifestyle and stay out of poverty."
Recent talks of slashing some of those programs have many seniors concerned. For example, in the next 12 years Medicare won't be able to fully fund hospital costs.
In Iowa alone, more than 400,000 seniors rely on social security and Medicare.
And with its price going up, seniors like Beverly say they're afraid they won't be able to keep up.
"If inflation continues to go up, the value of my income is just about wiped out," Trost said.
The results from the surveys and questionnaires will go to state leaders and ultimately to Washington D.C.
