McGrath Joins City for Amphitheater Venue

CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/ FOX 28)— McGrath Automotive group and city leaders announced their plan to be the naming sponsor of the new riverfront theater Wednesday.
"This was the perfect time, and a perfect venue," said Pat McGrath, president of the Cedar Rapids-based company.
And pretty soon this 7.1 million dollar venue may have the perfect name.
In exchange for the group paying the city $75,000 a year for next five years, they’re putting their name on it.
"It’ll be called The McGrath Amphitheater of Cedar Rapids," McGrath said. "This was the perfect fit for our family because it's a real family-oriented venue."
And the help for funding the entertainment venue couldn't have come at a better time.
"We'd had hoped that it'd be available in June, but it was pushed back to August,” said Venue Works, executive director Gene Felling. “Now, it looks like September."
One reason for the delay is the wet and rainy weather this spring, causing the ground to be too soft and not firm enough to safely pack thousands of people into the stadium.
Scheduled events like the annual “BBQ round up" had to be canceled.
"The concern was if you put a big crowd on it, the sod could slide down the hill," Felling said.
But even though the project has had a slow finish, city leaders say it's still a step in the right direction.
"Things have changed, and they've changed for the better," said Mayor Ron Corbett.
The city council will vote on the proposal next Tuesday. The amphitheater will be used for concerts and community events.
