Mount Vernon Residents Rally Around Local Businesses During Construction

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- Inside "El Sol Mexican Cuisine", business is good.
"The food is amazing" Susan Hargus said.

The people are celebrating the restaurant's one-year anniversary in Mount Vernon Thursday, but it's a sight owner Diego Rivera hasn't seen in months.

"We were pretty busy" Diego said.

That's because construction on a roundabout outside his door has slowed customer traffic.

"It doesn't bother me that they're doing it. It just bothers me that my business drops" Diego said.

Diego expects that drop has been anywhere from 30 to 40 percent.

Susan is determined, however, to keep the 'busy' in business.

A concerned citizen -- she started the "Shop the Roundabout" movement.

"We need to support them and value them" Susan said.

It's a reminder to residents to support the businesses along the construction, and the idea is catching on around town.

"If they're struggling a little bit because of the construction, you support them when they’re in need" resident Brent Brase said.

"I do believe once it's done, there's going to be more support" Mayor Scott Peterson said.

The construction is expected to run through October or November.
